Eight months ago, life was changed as she said hello to the world (at the early hour of 4 am and has been waking me up at the crack of dawn every day since). For months before that, lots of research was done regarding what might be needed to take care of this creature. There is a lot of stuff out there for just that purpose. I will preface the upcoming information with a few caveats…every baby and parent are different. That said, these things are what helped us the most. Perhaps later I will do things that weren’t helpful or that we didn’t get…if people are interested.
- The Rock ‘n Play: We were lucky enough to get this as a hand-me-down and it SAVED our lives. Little One had, what I assume, was at least a mild case of reflux. Thus, those first few months involved a lot of spit-up and difficulty sleeping, particularly during the day. At night, she slept in her Pack ‘n Play in our room, but for naps and general day-lounging, the Rock ‘n Play was where it’s at. Plus it was so easy to take with us. Apparently there are ones that auto rock, which would have been even cooler. Here are a few links:
Fancy pants version –
Bare bones (similar to what I had) –
- Swaddles: Where do I begin with swaddles?! Again, this was another thing that Tiny Dictator would not sleep without. Not only that, it calmed her when little else would. Without these, I would have had even less sleep. I loved the SwaddleMe brand with the little Velcro pieces. However, she was not much of a magician about coming out of them. Though I’ve heard some babies are, so just keep that in mind. I had probably more of them than I needed, but I really didn’t want to need one and not have it. Heaven sent.
Here’s a little link for you –
- Zip-up Sleepers: One particular day, somewhere in my early second trimester, I went a little crazy with a Once Upon a Child onesies sale. This turned out to be a mistake. I totally should have bought sleepers instead. You see, I had a summer baby and I thought “oh, she’ll be in onesies the whole first x number of months”. This turned out to not be the case. You see, I had her early and was advised not to take her outside because it was too hot. However, the house was too cool (in my opinion) to just keep her in a onesie. Plus, I’m being honest here, the kiddo did not like things pulled over her head and I was trying my best to keep the screaming to a minimum (Ha!). These are widely available everywhere and I don’t have a particular favorite. Although I have a heavy preference for the zippered as opposed to button-up.
- Backseat Mirror: This one definitely falls into the category of “didn’t understand until I became a mom”. Before that, I always wondered about the purpose of the mirror in the backseat. Now I get it. That thing is for moms like me who want to constantly check on their kiddo while driving. My Little One turns freakishly quiet when she is in the car and especially earlier on I wanted to make sure everything was okay back there. Again, these are probably available at a variety of places and I like this one even better than the one I have. Mine tends to move around a lot, but it seems silly to replace it at this point.
- Cozy Cover: While we are talking about car stuff, I have to give quite a nod to the Cozy Cover. There were some sub zero temperatures here in central Indiana this year…which is real fun to take your fresh human out in. Or maybe not so much. I had a time finding something that didn’t render her car seat less safe. Until I found this, again at Once Upon a Child (I love that place!). You just pop it over the car seat when you are ready to take the baby out of the car. It doesn’t interrupt any of the buckles or anything. Amazing! I generally took it off while Baby was in the car. It kept her roasty-toasty.
Here is an Amazon link, but are also available at Wal-Mart (according to Google) –
- Diaper Sprayer and Rinse Bucket: This is a very specific choice for those cloth diapering moms out there. I have loved cloth diapering. It works well for us. These two things make it so much easier when it comes to those messier diapers. The bucket fits right onto the toilet and you are able to more easily spray off the unmentionables. Not sure what else to say about that.
Here is the sprayer and bucket together –
Here is just the bucket –
There you have it. Some of my favorite finds thus far in this mommy adventure. The Amazon links are affiliate ones, meaning if you decide to get them for yourself, I get a portion of the proceeds (so to speak). The Target link is not, it’s just a plain old hyperlink. Again, let me know if you are interested in my thoughts on stuff we weren’t so fond of or just didn’t pick up. Also, I would appreciate opinions on whether you like the links better in the body of the post or if you would prefer them all together at the bottom.
Until next time, thanks for stopping by. Have a great day and be kind!
